Sounds complex, right? Well, actually, it's the same old thing you probably did in elementary school.
Take your container and put some seeds/beans in it. Shake it a little-see how it sounds. Put in more or take some out to see how the sound changes according to the amount of stuff inside. Remember, the smaller the container, the higher the pitch of the rattle.
Seal up your container. For things like oatmeal containers, you may need to use glue or tape to secure the top. (Who wants to vacuum during ritual?!)
Take the paper and draw pictures on it. Suns, moons, stars, your cat….whatever makes you happy! Wrap your container in the drawing/s and tape it closed.
For a drum, use a larger container like a coffee can. You can use the hammer and screw driver to punch holes in the side, and loop string through to hang the drum around your neck.
Another fun one is to take two of the sticks you've found outside, and use the hammer and screwdriver to put notches up and down one or both sticks. You can rub them across one another for a fun sound.
Take the stones you've collected, wash them and paint them with designs. You can then clack them together for another type of sound for your ritual symphony!
I hope you enjoy these tips for musical instruments. I'm sure there are those of you out there who have gourd rattle making skills, and other wonderful ideas for instruments. Please feel free to e-mail them to me so I can add them to the collection!
Most of all, have fun!
